December 2006 - The North Carolina new car and truck industry employs more than 33,000 salespersons, technicians, accountants, finance professionals and specialists across the state. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the industry accounts for 23% of total retail sales per year in North Carolina. NC new car and truck dealers generate hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue for state and local governments through sales tax, corporate tax and payroll tax revenue. The industry, built on the entrepreneurial values of small-town businessmen and women, has become a cornerstone of the state’s economy.

Yet, the industry did not become an economic cornerstone overnight. According to a survey conducted by NCADA, over 75% of North Carolina dealerships are family owned and many have been passed from one generation to another. Several dealerships in the State are already being run by the family’s third generation. The industry remains on of the largest family owned in America, and community involvement has become an integral part of its success and longevity.

James E. Nance of Confederate Motors Inc. in Albemarle is a third generation Chevrolet dealer and has been in the automotive business for 33 years. Nance, along with his wife Helen spend most of their time actively involved in the community. They helped start the Gray Stone Day School, a charter high school on the Pfeiffer University campus, which has ranked in the top 4 high schools in NC for the past 3 years. Nance is also a member of the Board of Directors for both Stanly Community College and Pfeiffer University.
